Fine quality quartered oak curio cabinet with an original brass gallery on top. A fancy leaf carving adorns the area just beneath the top surface.
The beds that were used in those early parlors were prominently displayed, and it was important that they favorably reflected the economic status of a household. Indeed, they were by far the most elaborate-and complicated pieces of furniture in a house. Only the mattress was actually known as the bed; the wooden bedstead, whether tall-post or low-post, was called a frame. The hangings - which typically included a tester or canopy cloth to cover the top of the frame; a headcloth hung against the wall to insulate against cold; head curtains and foot curtains that could be pulled around to enclose the bed; a coverlet; valances; and bases (dust ruffles) were known as furniture.
The warm golden brown finish is excellent, and this wonderful cabinet disassembles for moving. It is in excellent condition throughout, and has spectacular architectural presence. Skilled woodcarvers completed this piece about 1900, and the proportions and configuration are quite masterful. It is 11 1/2" wide, 10'2" tall, and 35" deep. I-B1751

Safes are among the most common items seen in photographs of late 19th century and early 20th century offices. Until 1820, safes, or "iron chests" as they were often called, were designed to protect against burglars, but they did not offer substantial protection against fire. Safes designed to protect their contents against fire were introduced beginning around 1820, but safes that successfully protected their contents against major building fires were not marketed until the early 1840s. After that, safes were routinely used in offices to protect against both fire and burglars. Typically, interior wooden partitions in office safes were designed to hold ledgers and other papers. In the 19th century, at around $150 to $225 for typical sizes, safes were the most expensive item of office equipment.
